Fifth Dragon

468
.

Fly high and humble

This Chinese dumplings joint, the Fifth Dragon, serves real xialongbao and hand-pull noddles in a downtown low cost mall. Although its food is far from a 'wow', but with its unbelievably friendly price for the locals, and the offer of real Chinese Northern bao (bun) and la-mian (noodle), the Fifth Dragon is an unpretentious restaurant that serves solid food but not a story or 'strawberry*'. So it is unlike the one in the opposite shopping mall (CWP); in here every penny a customer paid goes to the food, not to a PR cost or franchise fee.

MoMo Cafe

Back to the future

Recently I went to La Tavola, the luxury Italian restaurant of the Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel, there I found a surprise. Compared to a year ago, the menu had been 'upgraded', and the culinary outcome has also been 'upgraded', but the good price withstands.

I eat at Marriott Hotels' restaurant outlets quite often, they include the New York Steakhouse and Tsu Japanese Restaurant of the J.W. Marriott, Fei Ya and La Tavola of the Renaissance, and MoMo Cafe of the Courtyard. A recent visit to the Courtyard Hotel on Soi Mahalekluang 1, I ate at the hotel's MoMo Cafe with my friend. The first impression was that the service is as good as before, they are attentive and enthusiastic. By browsing the menu, both selections (of food) and the price had been revamped. For instance, the fish n' chips and wood-roast chicken 'enjoyed' a 50% price hike to THB 230++ and THB 260++ respectively, as well as most of the dishes in the menu, including the wood-fired pizza, all 'enjoyed' a new tag with 50% price hike. As for the taste of the food, no hike in quality and culinary skill though, and in contrast, the 'your-own' pizza (THB 380++) was quite awful in its crust and texture, very disappointing!

MoMo Cafe used to be Bangkok's most cherished hotel dining at mall food price, but the glory is definitely fading away!

St. Regis afternoon tea

Bangkok's best view for tea

The St. Regis Hotel, landed in one of the most premium locations in Bangkok, Rajdamri Road, offers prestige dining choices for the business elites and high-so(ciety) housewives. Most of the hotel's restaurant outlets are on the high floors, with spectacular views of the city and racecourse; even a low-so person like me would like to soak in the indulgence, at least for (just) an afternoon.

Madison lunch set

Affordable luxury lunch deal

Madison is the steakhouse in the Four Seasons Hotel, which offers luxury beef cuts such as Matsuzaka and Kobe to Wagyu and USDA Prime, prepared in an American twist. It is one of the most luxurious steakhouses in Bangkok, and arguably the best in the 90's when the Four Seasons Bangkok was the Regent Hotel.

A meal for two at Madison may cost a local junior manager a month of his salary, say THB 20,000 with a bottle of nice wine, or half of the price without wine. Luxury does sometimes come with promotions, during weekdays Madison offers a tempting sixty-minute business luncheon deal, which is a 2-course lunch set below the mark of one thousand Thai baht, including Madison's renowned all-u-can-eat salad bar. It is a good chance for non-regular customers
to sample Madison food and decide if it is justified to pay a luxury price for a-la-carte or dinner on another occasion.

Two weeks ago I revisited this once talk of the town steakhouse in Bangkok with an American foodie friend during lunchtime. The 3-course lunch set, THB 890++, consists of a soup or the all-u-can-eat salad bar, a main course with choices, and a desert with choices. It is a fairly good deal at this classy grill room. However the food didn't live up to expectations; the salad bar isn't as 'wow' as before, choices cut back and quality declined, for instance, scallops in one of the salad dishes had an artificial texture and tasted bland. Imagine the taste of an eatable rubber or Japanese fake scallops those kids eat! For mains I opted for pan-fried sea bass and it was quite good; but my friend wasn't as lucky as me. His grilled sirloin steak in black pepper sauce didn't have a decent beef flavor and was not tender, though not over-cooked. He described it as coffee-shop quality. The dessert, a creme burlee, was fine.

The food quality and taste aren't as good as last time I visited Madison, which was two years ago.

khao-chae @ MoMo Cafe

Khao-chae, continues

Tea time, I went to MoMo Cafe of Courtyard Hotel Bangkok for the wood roasted sping chicken. Found out the khao-chae set is on her April special menu, at THB 250++ per set (for one person).

During April (while khao-chae being served) I eat khao-chae as much as I can. Some serve real good khao-chae sets, but the icy rice soup serving is stingily mini and the portion of tidbits being too much.

At MoMo Cafe, the set came with generous portion (good for two persons, at least) of soaked parboiled rice in icy jasmine scented water, separate ice cube in a small bowl, and of course, tidbits.

I like the decent serving, but not the taste. Sad! The icy rice soup, I suspect the chef didn't follow strict traditional recipe but only pour food aroma to make up the jasmine scented water. The tidbits, maybe were sourced from a market, precooked.

Four Seasons Hotel Sunday brunch

Sunday Brunch
Parichart Court @ Four Seasons Hotel

The Sunday Brunch at Parichart Court of the Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok is a desirable one among Bangkok high-so(ciety) and expat diners. This famous Sunday brunch was the first one that includes pan-fried foie-gras and free-flow Martini and wine in the buffet scene in Bangkok later adopted by most competitors.

The plentiful selection of food including a salad table with Caesar salad, marinated salad and organic leaves, assorted cold cuts, Prosciutto di Parma, homemade smoked salmon, asparagus tip salad with shaved parmesan cheese, mixed mushroom salad, marinated green and black olives, and more…

On the cold appetizer station we found Australia rock oysters, sea crabs, Tasmania blue mussels, tiger prawns, rock lobsters, red claw lobsters, scallops and a wild range of home-made dipping sauces and condiments.

In the pond of the Parichart Court there was a set-up for the ‘Caviar in Pool’, including cod roe, salmon roe, black vegetable caviar, whitefish roe, trout roe, lumpfish orange roe, and condiments such as wheat blinis, sour cream, lemon and boiled egg.

The Japanese station featured sushi, California roll, eel teriyaki, and chilled soba; while the Chinese station featured assorted dim sum (ha-gar, siu-mai, …), shark’s fin soup, barbecue whole duck, barbeque pork (char-siu), barbeque marinated baby pork rib, …

Asian specialties didn’t stop here. An Indian corner of traditional chicken tandoori, marinated fish tikka, shish kebabs, plain and garlic naan, potato samosa, chicken salad (chard ra ja wab), prawn salad (gin ka razed), and curries such as chick-pea curry, aloo kobe matta, paneer curry and vegetable curry, were all included.

The breakfast station featured waffles, fruits and berry pancakes, assorted Danish pastries, croissants, bread rolls, muffins, toast, cream cheese, butter, jam, homemade pâté, and an egg station with choices of smoked ham, sausages, bacon, tomato, and mushroom, while I put caviar in my omelet.

Came to the best buffet foie gras in town, the foie gras corner had choices of pan-seared foie gras with port wine sauce, foie gras sausage, terrine de foie gras and foie gras custard with truffle oil.

By this time we were half full, the grilled seafood and steak from the Madison Grill were awaiting us to sample. They included tiger prawns, rock lobsters, fresh trout, salmon steak, John Dory, snow fish, tuna, lamb chops, beef medallion, sirloin steak, spiced pork and veal sausage, assorted grilled vegetables, baked potatoes and sauces. Also there was a carving station for roast duck, crispy pork loin, roast beef and roast chicken.

To save some room for desserts, we didn’t sample the pasta and risotto prepared by the Biscotti, and the Thai corner prepared by the Spice Market, which featured with four kind of spicy salads including som tum, charcoal grilled pork ball dumplings with chili dips, marinated tradition chicken, and Issan sausage (sai krok Issan), steamed prawn soufflé (hor mok goong), and northern style egg noodle curry with chicken (khao soi).

Couldn’t be missed in a prominent buffet scene is the cheese board. Four Seasons prepared for us the Swiss cheese, goat cheese, Roquefort, Brie, blue Stilton, Grana Padano, Provolone, Asiago, Scamorza, Gorgonzola, Taleggio Cheese, with condiments such as dried fruits, dates, apricots and walnuts.

The Dessert Station, not extensive but impressive, included tiramisu, brownies, strawberry trifle, peach crème brûlée, chocolate praline, fresh fruit tart, pistachio raspberry cake, Sacher cake, Ticino cake, cheese crêpe, cherry crumble, banana and Grand Marnier soufflé, crêpe suzette, ripe mango, fresh fruits and ice cream.

The cost for this plentiful buffet treat is B2,200++ included free flow of wines (6 red and 6 white), beers, Martini cocktails, fresh squeezed fruit juice and soft drinks.

Enjoy!
