Steak Today

Steaks for all

Where in Bangkok almost all twenty vendors in a food court serve steaks instead of soup noodle or one dish rice menu? There is one (and only one) - The Samyan Food Loft.

Samyan Market, the first modern fresh market in Thailand, is located in the vicinity of Chulalongkorn University for half a century. Two years ago the renowned Market had been relocated (by the Chula Committee) to its present location between Chula Soi 32 and Chula Soi 34. The new Market is bigger, brighter and better. Second floor of the Market is a welcomed food court (or Samyan Food Loft) for the pretty well-off Chula students and Samyan residents. Maybe high-so kids don't like somtum, they have a good appetite on steaks.

chicken steak, THB 70

additional steak sauce the Samyan Food Loft style

mixed grill on sizzling hot plate, THB 130 (since the beef steak is not from Snake River, to save my teeth, I asked for a replacement, a piece of fish fillet, very fresh, and good)

Hua Pla Tang Lao Yee

BANGKOK AMAZING GOURMET
.

More Than Just Fish Head

Long before Bangkok's epicurean scene sprawling all over the city, Samyan was the center of gourmet for gourmets. C.B.D. white collars and well-off Chula students pick those seafood restaurants in Samyan market (moved last year) and high-so Thai-Chinese foodies visit those no-frills pochana for a real feast.

Hua Pla Mor Fai Tang Lao Yee Samyan (Samyan Fish Head Hot-pot) is the one in business since my grandpa era and still standing strong no matter in years so many hua-pla mor-fai imitations have being raised in the city. Since my first visit almost 15 years ago its food quality always live up to my expectations (if not better), thanks to the owner's one-shop policy.

1. yum pla muek (spicy herbs salad with squid) - squid so fresh, dressing spicy but the heat and sour well balanced with subtly sweet, herbs yield nice aroma, good starter
2. satay pork - marinated pork (with spices and milk) is so tender (but not soft, just tender), another simple but good starter at Hua Pla Mor Fai Tang Lao Yee Samyan

3. hua-pla mor fai (fish head hot pot) Thai Baht 200 - the tomyum clear broth is excellent, a chef friend told me that Thai dishes shall be cooked with a proper balance of 5 basic elements of taste, proper measure of chili in harmony with other ingredients become essential in Thai cooking, not just as spicy as one can take; here the Thai-CN version is mild on heat, all spices and seasoning were well balanced, our tongue doesn't get burn therefore we can enjoy the flavor of the fish head without overwhelming by chilies
4. the spicy dip, soul of most Thai dishes

the wooden table base (legs) and chairs tell the shop has a history!

5. barbecue scallop with Hua Pla Mor Fai Samyan house recipe marinated pork Baht 250
6. sea bass in chili and lime sauce Baht 350
, sea bass very fresh, good seasoning sauce yield excellent spicy, salty and sour taste in harmony

7. stir -fried kale with crispy pork
8. baked glass-noodle with prawn in tin-pot Baht 300

Samyan delis

Samyan cravings

You have heard about the five-decade renowned Jok Samyan don't you? Our fact finding confirmed that Bangkok's Samyan district houses more than just a decade-old congee shop; and eventually Samyan has been a foodies paradise for decades. Samyan gourmet map consisting of two areas, one on the Chula side (Sub-Soi Chula) and the other at Saphan Luang. Of course you have no idea what am I saying here (unless you are Bangkokians) therefore I am kind enough to show you the Samyan eat-until-drop guide.

First, where is Samyan? It is roughly referred to the area starts west from the begin of Rama IV Road (Hua-Lam-Phong Railway Station) until it meets Phayathai Road on the East (Samyan intersection). Samyan is an old Thai-Chinese business community in between the C.B.D. and the China Town (Yaowaraj).

Samyan gourmet route on Saphan Luang (Yellow Bridge) side; we ate this, this and this:

1. guay-jub hawker right outside SCB Bank, 566 Rama IV Road

2. dimsun hawker oppsite the guay-jub stall at 566 Rama IV Road
(the cream bun is a must try!)

3. freshly-made curry puff with varies stuffing

4. Tang-Tsu-Heng (530 Rama IV Road) stands here for half a century

5. Swang crab claw noodle, famous for the noodle, infamous for the price

6. Loong-Loon fish balls and yentafo noodle, 1091 Rama IV Road

7. Lan-10 Rad-na Shop, on Chula Soi 5
(in heir of Samyan's Tor Raja Rad-na Yod-Pak recipe)

8. Samyan beef hotpot and noodle, 581 Rama IV Road

*conclude your roadside gourmet journey with home-made coconut ice cream at
Viroon Ice Cream and bought home some goon-chiang (Thai-Chinese sausage)

Likkit Pochana

Likkit Pochana

Small, non-air conditioning, delicious food, family owned, located in the heart of a community, and no expansion plan is the character of some remarkable family run restaurants in Bangkok. Likkit Pochana is one of them.

Easily be reached from the MBK Centre or the Rama 4 Road, this pochana (restaurant) is in the community of Chula University. Regulars are students in the area and Bangkok white collars, so the price is right, as well as the taste. Yes, if you are looking for authentic Thai household cuisine, this is where you should place a bookmark on it. Make sure you are good for chilies and other ingredients that bring out the pungent of heat. In Thai cuisine, household cuisine + authenticity = extreme spicy.

Of course, we ordered the shop best seller Tomyumgoong (hot and sour prawn soup), as every table did the night I visited. There is no mercy in the degree of spicy, be prepared that your tongue feels the extreme heat. Didn’t you ask for something authentic? That is it. Perfectly balanced tomyum broth enriched by the coral from prawn heads also enhanced by the aroma of galangal, kaffir lime, lemongrass, and of course chilies was truly the refreshing starter of the night.

Yum (Thai spicy salad) is also done well in Likkit Pochana. Yum can be eaten with a glass of beer alone or with rice as a main course. We ordered the Yum Pla Saleek (deep-fried pilot fish spicy salad). Tell them you are foreigners (oh they can figure out by themselves indeed) and request for less chili in the yum. They did for me, and my yum was just mild hot.

Hoy Lai Pad Nam Phrik Phao (stir-fried clam with chili and basil sauce), clam size was big, meat was fresh, tasted naturally sweet with a hint of ocean scent, and the nam phrik phao sauce was aromatic pungent. We also ordered the Pad Pla Tatim (stir-fried fresh water fish) and Pad Tualan Tao (stir-fried sugar pea). Gaeng Som Pla (fish and papaya curry sour soup) with omelet and pla chon fish was delightful.

At Likkit Pochana the order came out quickly, served hot, even when the restaurant was fully packed. Every order had turned out to be a delightful treat, and service was prompt and attentive. The bill, cheaper than burger sets in any Burger King. Oops, no plastic so please bring cash.
