Tong Lai Sung

Cuisine of the Qin terracotta warriors

After two decades in business Tong Lai Sung is still going strong as an old-gun Chinese provincial cuisine present in Bangkok waives Chinese expats from homesick. The small and simple eatery serves Chinese northern provincial cuisine with a bit of Sichuan twist.

Green Bamboo House

BANGKOK AMAZING GOURMET
.

Green Bamboo House 綠竹館

A specialty of Chinese provincial cuisine, Green Bamboo House is one of very few quality mainland-Chinese-immigrant-run Chinese restaurants present in Bangkok.

Green Bamboo House dishes are authentic, no trace of any Thai-Chinese recipes!
Arguably it is one of the best family-run Chinese restaurant in Bangkok.

Green Bamboo House also offers Chinese provincial mutton hot pot. Chinese (authentic) hot pot focus on the ingredients, say fresh and live ingredients. Unlike Thai-Chinese hot pot joints, Green Bamboo House doesn't serve frozen seafood.

Hot-pot slide show:

Yong Herh

.

Sinfully yummy Taiwanese soy milk

Yong Herh is a Chinese northern provincial delicacy house with Taiwanese accent. Its xiao-long-bao (thin in bun layer but juicy inside) is not only the best in Bangkok but also on highest quality in compare to those in Hong Kong and China.

My favorite orders at Yong Herh are the hand-made noodle a-la-minute with braised beef brisket in hourly-simmered beef soup, and the nam-tao-hu (home-made soy milk).

Think of xiao-long-bao, think of Yong Herh!

Samyan delis

.

Samyan cravings

You have heard about the five-decade renowned Jok Samyan don't you? Our fact finding confirmed that Bangkok's Samyan district houses more than just a decade-old congee shop; and eventually Samyan has been a foodies paradise for decades. Samyan gourmet map consisting of two areas, one on the Chula side (Sub-Soi Chula) and the other at Saphan Luang. Of course you have no idea what am I saying here (unless you are Bangkokians) therefore I am kind enough to show you the Samyan eat-until-drop guide.

First, where is Samyan? It is roughly referred to the area starts west from the begin of Rama IV Road (Hua-Lam-Phong Railway Station) until it meets Phayathai Road on the East (Samyan intersection). Samyan is an old Thai-Chinese business community in between the C.B.D. and the China Town (Yaowaraj).

Samyan gourmet route on Saphan Luang (Yellow Bridge) side; we ate this, this and this:

1. guay-jub hawker right outside SCB Bank, 566 Rama IV Road

2. dimsun hawker oppsite the guay-jub stall at 566 Rama IV Road
(the cream bun is a must try!)

3. freshly-made curry puff with varies stuffing

4. Tang-Tsu-Heng (530 Rama IV Road) stands here for half a century

5. Swang crab claw noodle, famous for the noodle, infamous for the price

6. Loong-Loon fish balls and yentafo noodle, 1091 Rama IV Road

7. Lan-10 Rad-na Shop, on Chula Soi 5
(in heir of Samyan's Tor Raja Rad-na Yod-Pak recipe)

8. Samyan beef hotpot and noodle, 581 Rama IV Road

*conclude your roadside gourmet journey with home-made coconut ice cream at
Viroon Ice Cream and bought home some goon-chiang (Thai-Chinese sausage)

khao-phad

150
.

Khao-phad

Khao-phad or Thai fried rice is not oily. It is always fried dry and full of flavor that yield as the best easy food for tourists and locals.

Like the Thai accent khao-kluk-kapi (fried rice in fermented shrimp paste) is unique, while khao-phad kaphrao gai/goong (fried rice in hot basil and chilies with chicken meat/prawn) has a flavor of heat.

basic fried rice available in every corner in Thailand

Also in the limelight shall include the Thai-Chinese style khao-phad nam-liep (fried rice with pickled black olive and minced pork), and khao-phad ka-na pla-khem (fried rice with kale and salted fish); both best served with fresh chilies and lime.

Of course we will not opt out the world class
khao-ob sapparod or baked pineapple fried rice (it is actually fried rice in mild yellow curry with chicken meat, prawn, and pineapple served in a baked pineapple), and khao-phad Amerigan (American fried rice in tomato sauce with ham, chicken wings and fried eggs) of which you only find this delicacy in Thailand but not in the States.

Khao-phad is conveniently available in any restaurant throughout Thailand, from a roadside hawker to hotel's outlet.

kuay-tiew-lord

149
.

kuay-tiew-lord

Another Chinese inspired Thai delis, kuay-tiew-lord or fresh rice spring rolls Thai-Chinese style, consist of bak-thong-ko (Cantonese: you-tiao) and goon-chiang (Thai-Chinese sausage) stuffing in rice roll wrapper. The texture is quite chewy compared to cheung-fun, the Hong Kong version of kuay-tiew-lord.

Where to sample one?

1. An An Lo, Thonglo Soi 15, off Sukhumvit Road
2. Lee Cafe, LG Floor, Urban Kitchen, Erawan Plaza
3. Silom Restaurant, Silom Soi 15, Bangrak
4. Food Court, 6/Floor, MBK Center, Pratumwan

khao-tom

148
.

Khao-tom

Khao-tom, a bowl of cooked rice in running soup (a.k.a. rice soup), is another true delis for the Thais. In Thailand, Khao-tom is commonly served either a-la carte or as a single bowl menu.

The popular choices for a single bowl khao-tom may be khao-tom moo-sap (rice soup with minced pork), khao-tom pla (rice soup with fish), and khao-tom goong-su (rice soup with prawn). For a-la carte, a bowl of plain rice soup can be accompanied by a few side dishes such as braised/stew meat, deep-fried fish, fried Thai sausage, stir-fried vegetables, and yum (spicy Thai salad).

Single bowl khao-tom:-

seafood khao-tom from Khaotom Pla Yaowaraj (Soi Phlap Phla Chai)

rice soup with duck meat from Chan Ee Fa (Plaeng Nam Road, Yaowaraj)

A-la carte khao-tom feast:-

Khao-mok-gai

Fried (or boiled) chicken on turmeric rice is khao-mok-gai or biryani rice with chicken. This single dish menu is of course well received by the Muslim community in Thailand, with increasing popularity among non-Muslim Thais as well. Khao-mok-gai is halal food.

Where to get a decent share of khao-mok-gai?

1. Petra Restaurant, Sukhumvit Soi 3/1 (Little Arab)
2. Food Court, 5/floor, the Emporium Mall
3. Muslim Restaurant, 135 Charoeankrung Road
4. Khao Mok Kai Bang Kao, Pracha U-thit Road, Thung Kru
