Talingpling

Talingpling is a wonderful family restaurant if we can stand for their relatively rude service.

Normandie at Oriental Hotel BKK is the best best French food we had. It made the rest no taste at all.
It is worth the price.
The dessert and the capuccino is so good.

There was one time my local Thai friend asking me which is my favourite restaurant and my answer is Le Normandie at the Oriental Bangkok. She was puzzled "what about for Thai food?". I told her "no more. The best I tried was Celadon (Sukhothai Sathorn) - their coconut fragrant rice still recalling in my mind, but no longer good now.".

Le Normandie - they do know how to surprise customers! I can tell the Chef spent so much time and effort in making the stocking so nice and perfect! Stocking and sauce are the main spirit in Western cuisine. At B1,000 something for a nice decent French meal - I can't suggest anymore.

otherwise Le Normandie will not top the no.1 French restaurant in Asia, of course, when both quality and price taking into account we mean

If I were Le Mormandie, I would raise the price a bit due to all those good comments. Don't forget, besides the good food, good service and good dessert, the good view is also the competitive edge.

Haha... just read a typo error - shouldn't say stocking. Should be stock. Sorry... too tired for my dizzy eyes. and typed too fast.

Well to many local Thais, B1,000 for a meal is not usual. So if one enjoys their service, they should tip more. :)

Agreed with Jonathan in the SEA about the tips.
Is Normandie really ranked no 1 in Asia?? It tops those French restaurants in HK?? I cannot believe that. I guess they only compare those with the same price. I bet HK has good French food but their price is a lot higher though.

if price and service (service to all, not just well-off regulars) taken into account, Bangkok's Le Normandie traditional French cuisine shall be the best in Asia

Stella, food is appreciation and joy, so it is difficult to score a restaurant only focus on food without the service and price

good news, until Sep. 2008, Le Normandie offers B2,200 4-course dinner, never before (probably to help us fight for crazy high oil price), another steal, this time is dinner

I cannot help myself writing my comment(I usually hate writing and typing).
Guys, do you know I am a French chef in Paris and now you are telling me there is good French food in Thailand. I am surprised they have good French restaurant in Bangkok. This Normandie really looks impressive, and the price is very cheap. How can we compete with you? Maybe I shall migrate to Bangkok instead.

well, the 'steal' price with such a decent quality, it really worth your visit to Bangkok's Oriental; of course, if compare to Tour d'Argent there is still a big gap

since economic is bad thanks to US sub-prime and crazy oil price, visit to Thailand is a good time now, everything is so cheap (esp. for those use Euro) even the Oriental have to launch its never-before promotion (even during there 1997 economic turmoil Oriental didn't cut the room rates and offer restaurants' promotion)

i like to chat with chefs esp. my knowledge in French cuisine is very limited, need to know more, pls comment more in my blog, thanks

I just found out a lot of restaurants here I did not go yet. And they all look good.

Bon Jour, Mr. French Chef, I am not that good at French food either. Because of my work, I need to go to Cannes every year and drop by Paris for visiting my friends there. Le Normandie is really good as compared to those French restaurants I have ever tried, especially my local French friends told me why Cannes are famous for cultural events because of the unique and nice restaurants over there. By the way, can you let me know which French restaurant you are working in Paris, I will try to go to your restaurant next time I will be in Paris.

yes, Tea, 2,100 net for a 4-course dinner at Le Normandie of the Oriental Hotel, buy two dinner we got a bottle of wine on complimentary

yes, it is about $106 or hk$1,050 include a bottle of wine per couple, hey guys, know where to impress your girlfriend now?

in the sea said...

Yes, I know what you mean. Sorry I still don't think I will go for it regardless of the wine. Cathay Pacific often called me for free wine tasting (BTW, they just called too for an invitation to try their new seat and cabin design; then I asked "aren't you showing it on the TV ad. widely? their answer is "oh, we will have even something newer.".). I often turned down those things with a little bit too much flamboyant. Besides, the restaurant must be packed with people because some people would find it attractive with wine. Sorry in this regard I am kind of a hermit.

in the sea, this promotion is not for us since we don't drink

but i am sure many people may make good use of the promotion

like fillet-o said, good chance to impress their girlfriends (at least until september) :)

Is Shabu Shabu spelled wrong in the blog?

In-the-Sea,
The French chef is not working in a restaurant; she works at a catering place doing party catering for LV, Channel, Hermes when they hold promotion events for their buyers and associates. I will ask her the name of the place next time when she emails me(she does not read emails everyday).

I see. Actually, one of my Paris friend's husband got a bit upset when I mentioned about Normandie. He already denied there is no good French food in places other than France. No point for me to argue as he is already shutting his back door. At least, I tried some lousy food in France, lousy bread too. Don't think every French food in France is good - it's too generalised. Just like in HK, there are some lousy BBQ pork, lousy steamed rice.....etc. No single rule at all. Be more receptive.

thanks Stella, it shall be shabu shabu

We do have some good friends from France. Although they are inexpressive and quiet, it is good in a way that we don't need to B.S. with each other.

I do meet a lot of nice French people and British people. Again, there are some arrogant HK people too I met. So there shouldn't be something much in too general. Then in Japan, there are also some rude people I came across. So let's be more open.

How come part of the meat looks dark? Is it fresh? Or it is some type of special meat and I am just ignorant?

in the sea said...

Cindy, it's because the meat down under is the black plate. When you see the meat less daker, it's because it's overlapped with another slice of meat.

Anonymous said...

Oh, I see. Thank you "in the sea" for the explanation.

What's the link between shabu shabu and French/British folks?

in the sea said...

They don't relate to each other if you would notice the title of the photos. One is about Normandie French restaurant in Oriental Bangkok. The other one is on Shabu Shabu on another restaurant.

i will not delete any comment just someone express his/her own view in general without in particular pointing to someone

so if we feel some words post impropriety, then don't speak too fast next time

i am confident as gentlemen/ladies in the new age we do respect friends from all walks of culture

in the sea said...

Yes, I agreed with what you said. Sometimes I am just a bit too stressful from my daily things with people urging on their belief and religion as well as by forcing the others to take that. I truly feel that it's my subconscious speaking back to what I have been forced to accept some belief and religion...etc., like my friend and I have been warned for not going to Bangkok, especially for my friend (a Christian), that Thailand is a Buddhist country. This is just one of the examples. Lots of things like that. I think I was not to speak that out too fast, but just a bit emotional.
