I like the tempura and the BBQ stick here. The sashimi is also very fresh here. A rated.

Oh, Torajiro - a big surprise to me! I walked by this restaurant and could have missed it. The sashimi is superb! I had the sashimi rice and at B380 they put Sea urchin on it. The BBQ stuff is also nice. Yes, tempura is difficult and they made it! Thonglor soi 13 has become busier with lots of impressive restaurants. When I went there to my business associate in 98, there was almost nothing but now it's so different.

Torajiro is doing pretty good even it branch out to Suk 24 and Central World, its quality is as good as the first year. Instead, the more talk-about (at least more HK people talk-about) Uomasa doesn't keep up quality after it branch out to Suk 63 and few shopping malls. More important, it is quite cheap when quality taking into account esp. compare to non-authentic brand such as ZEN or KOI. But don't forget, Torajiro is authentic, own and run by Japanese. So it is a hole-in-a-wall in Thonglo area.

Totally agreed with Jonathan and Thai Club. Tarojiro Restaurant is the best Japanese Food for this trip. Good food and good price. Sea urchin in the B380 sashimi rice is a big bargain. Would like to come again next time.(Why we waited this long to come here?)

Dear Blogger, I don't even think ZEN can be compared to any Japanese restaurants. Expensive is another thing but their food sucks.... I think it attracts some people who like their decoration, maybe. Stella, this is why most HK people go to BKK in every few months' time. Well for me, I go there almost every month or every other month.

Stella said...

You are lucky Jonathan in the SEA that you go to BKK every other month. You are almost local.
My friend mentioned KOI is famous in BKK but it was declined by Mr. Thai(Mr. Tee) aleady.

I think we should be "rabbit" (on experiment) to try the restaurants we once liked or disliked. I find out quite a number of restaurants may not keep up with a stable quality or services. Even for my favourite Lord Jim's, I found out their crab and prawn were once not so fresh.

ture

that's why i do 2-3 times of 'undecover' sampling before writing a review for each restaurant/hotel, and revisit those establishments at least once a year, if standard drop, i drop it, fair enough

in the sea said...

Correct. So let's try again Ban Khun Mae and Ban Khun Pauo...haha... Khor Tor Krup. *remarks: Ban Khun Mae (Mama's Home) and the other as "Father's Home", just opposite to Novotel Siam Square. Also, we should try those Mr. Wu Wei Chung recommended and see if those restaurants are still bad or even worse. OK, think we should set up a blog of "Don't Go" (actually it's easy if we can risk the copyright issue, we can just copy the Wu Wai Chung's recommendations and paste those here.). BTW, we should write them in a clever way to avoid defamation liability.

This must be the one you recommended me to try and compare with AOI, Mr. Club.

yes, anonymous, this is the one (also recommend Suikin, u can read my review on Suikin in my previous article, july-24,2007)

It seems Bangkok has lots of good Japanese food. You people eat more Japanese food than I do.(I am a Japanese guy in LA, who only eats Ramen and rice. Sushi or sashimi is only a treat to me once a month.)

to anonymous 12:33, welcome to the blog our Japanese friend, so place yourself a visit to Bangkok, then u will eat move sashimi and sushi :)

Har... going to Tokyo from LA is shorter than going to Bangkok, at least 7 hours shorter. But Mr. japanese in LA, Bangkok is really charming in every way - food, fashion and stuff, local culture, people... There are several Asian cities - Tokyo, Taipei, Hong Kong and Bangkok. I wouldn't find myself bored in these cities.

I have not been to Bangkok yet. But my colleague told me eating sushi/sashimi in Bangkok is a lot cheaper than in Japan.
When I went back to Japan last year, I only ate sashimi twice(during a 10-day stay).

The Japanese in LA

best sashimi and sushi (esp. sushi) of course Japan is second to none

but, for multi culture of (good) food with a friendly price tag, that must be Bangkok

Some of you may not wanna try, but I do find it a nice dish. Thai raw shrimp in lime chili sauce. Some say it's not good to eat raw shrimp in Thailand, but I just see which restaurant that is. Mr. Thailand Club, next time I should go take a photo of this one.

Thailand Club said...

yes if anyone interested in the raw shrimp with chilies in fish sauce in-the-sea talk about, order the goong chae nam pla (literally prawn soak in fish sauce), although it doesn't mentioned spicy in its name, but it is pungent hot

if u get diarhea after a bite, don't blame me la, instead send ur hospital bill to in-the-sea :) hahaha

hint: don't order this dish in a street side shop, order one in a reputable Thai restaurant or in a hotel restaurant (not because they are necessary fresh and clean, but u can sue them if the dish made u get diarhea :)

We have raw shrimp or crab or snail soaked in wine in Shanghai; it was so delicious.
I am a foreign guy who has been to Shanghai

Fillet-O Fish said...

Oh you are really good at eating, raw crab in wine, what a gourmet! You shall considered yourself lucky having a bite of the crab in wine, or snail in wine. Have you try the famous chicken in wine a.k.a. drunken chicken? Delicious.

Stella said...

Yes Fish Burger,
I like drunken chicken in wine. This is also my son's favorite Shanghai dish. But I did not try raw shrimp or crab in wine. My father(he is from Shanghai)said they are delicious.

Fillet-O,
Not everyone likes raw shrimp or crab in wine. First of all the raw part is scary. Second of all the wine part only for selected group. I can say this kind of dish you either like it very much or not at all.

Fillet-O Fish said...

right it is kind of like it or hate it

for myself, since the frist bite of spicy raw shrimp in fish sauce, i never have that again

for somtum (the raw papaya spicy salad), if it is somtim Thai then it is ok to me (but not like it still), but if it is somtum poo that tiny raw mud crab and feremeted Issan fish are the ingredients, i cannot take it

and drunken chicken, heavenly gourmet

Thailand Club said...

if u let western friends to vote thier 10 best Chinese dishes, i think the drunken chicken may be one

Haha... one of my skillful dishes is drunken chicken - most of my friends in HK like it quite much and I am contented with the way I have tried (actually I failed for the first several times). I will do that and post it in my blog some time later and of course with my recipe. However, can you get the Siu Hing Wine in LA, Stella? Haha, seems like I asked you "if you can get this or that in LA".

About making raw stuff, you can do it at home. For hygiene and bacteria killing, you can first soak the lively stuff in a bowl of water (boiled water) and put a large amount of rock salt. Such salty water can at least kill 99% of the common bacteria. I think that's enough though - 99%. If you get the remaining 1%, then don't worry, treat yourself for a inside out clean-up of your body. For Som tum, I hate that smelly dead crab! So every time I will see if the previous one having som tum ordered smelly dead crab, if so, I will bypass it and looked for the next one to try that and I will be on a third to order, when I am in the food court.

i think they can get most of the CN ingredients in LA, no worry

Stella said...

Yes In-the-Sea,
We do have Siu Hing wine here in LA, also all kinds os soy sauce like Kam Lan, Lee Kam Kee, Chu Gong Kill Pai, etc...

in the sea said...

OK, I just made my drunken chicken wings and posted it on my blog. Stella, it's not difficult at all.

Thailand Club said...

it looks delicious

what kind of chicken u use, not free range or ching-yeun chicken right!

in the sea said...

As the chicken is soaked with wine and the chicken broth for quite a long time, it's not necessary to use some expensive chicken. The hot and cold crash will make the chicken wings taste very special.
