Baan Khanitha

Nice food, the look only!

Baan Khanitha, a Thai restaurant in the heart of Bangkok, where no Thais will eat there with their family, except for entertaining overseas guests for expense-account dining purposes.

I found Baan Khanitha and Gallery (on Sathorn Road) served as an overpriced canteen (very noisy) for tourists; service and food were poor, as well as the wine list. Baan Khanitha may be a major sponsor for MSG, salt and soy sauce as they were the taste I found in my dishes sampled; not a trace of the harmony of the five tastes in a Thai cuisine found.

Endless good food in BKK.
My Thai friend Timothy just came back to LA last Wednesday.
He did not get to see his sisters since their area was flooded.
A trip wasted.

I remember you told me this is a skeleton rated restaurant. :)

@Anonymous 19:42: i walk there, as inner BKK (and downtown) is still dry, flood pics u saw and news reported r outskirts and greater Bangkok, the floodwater reach border of inner Bangkok in a couple of days, so sooner or never, the city may 'share' some water from the flooded Central plains

@Anonymous 08:16: u r right, it is definitely not another example of good food

@Sea: u r right; i went there with some senior ppl, so i hv no say, just follow, and suffer (my taste buds); however, i remember 20 years ago, first time i ate at its Suk Soi 23 branch, the food was okay, or probably i am green (about Thai cuisine) at that time ..

Sea, from the pic, there r three bowls of liquid food (different curries, yes, they don't look like, and they don't taste like either), clockwise from the sweet and sour fish, can u tell what r they by their color and presentation? pls try to guess ..

oops, btw these 'curry infused cream soup' taste the same, so u know how terrible chefs cook!

I ate here once, for me was not bad, curry was like Western cream soup, the food was for tourist. Lots of ajinomoto, the aftermath was we drink lots of coke.

I see. Being a good boy to the seniors is on top priority. OK, my guess are deep fried Goby fish, mango sticky rice, Tom Khai gai, deep fried chicken in pandan leaves, (forgot the exact term but it's the leaves wrapping those small ingredients, kind of a classic Thai appetizer), small photos as stir fried veggie, curry, stir fried bitter gourd leaves, curry, then yam som o in the middle. :)

yes, by its color, anyone (hv a little knowledge of TH cuisine) may guess the first bowl of liquid food (clockwise from the fish) is tom-kha-gai (mild spicy soup of galangal, lemongrass and coconut milk with chicken), the second one should be green curry, and the last one (with grape) maybe veggie curry ..

but, the fact is, first bowl was green curry, and third bowl was red curry with dick (both at Baan Khanitha & Gallery, Sathorn branch), and the second bowl was red curry with duck (pic taken in 2006, at Baan Khanitha Thai Cuisine, Asok branch); not just the color and ingredients were not right, the taste was awful, no taste of curry, and very salty in every dishes, a terrible dining experience!

yes, Tommy, they r more like cream soup, not Thai curry as they suppose to be!

Mmh.. interesting. So there will be no more next time. BTW, hope this place is close to the canal. Let it flow. :)
