khao-chae @ MO outlets

320
.

Khao-chae, again!

After too much khao-chae enlarged my little tummy, I went to a Mandarin Oriental's outlet for her classic summer dish, food of my fond.

And, it was khao-chae, again!

There are three parts to khao-chae - parboiled rice, jasmine scented icy water, and tidbits or side dishes. Celebrity (Thai) chef Vichit Makura of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Bangkok has a good hand in the jasmine scented water (icy), as well as the tidbits for khao chae. At Sala Rimnaam, Mandarin Oriental's Royal Thai restaurant, khao chae serves (only) during lunch, on the buffet table. I don't like Sala Rimnaam Thai buffet; and, I don't like the all-you-can-eat concept for khao-chae. I prefer it is served elegantly in set, not self service. Luckily, the Hotel's other outlets, came to my rescue. Khao-chae at the Salon de L'Oriental (at the Emporium), and L'Escape de l'Oriental (at Siam Paragon), served in set. Available throughout April.

Mmh.. in the photo. TC, may I ask if you change your AWB (Auto White Balance) when you took this photo? This is the key point to this guess though I wouldn't tell why now. Then the hint is on the white balance together with something in the photo. Mmh... I need to have Pixmation check on this and give me advice too....

Wow too much iPhone iPad xbox wii games and now exciting TC guessing game returns!

I know what you really like (love) in the Oriental cafes, so it is not fair if I place a guess. As, it will not be a guess, but an answer though!

The picture shown does give us hints.

Well you did mention that you like to eat that Chiangmai noodle - khao soi, kind of love with it, so let it be that!

How come you guys can see some hints from the photo? I see nothing there as the plate is blank.

My guess is either the 1st or 2nd dish but more towards the 1st one(Khao Soi/Chingmai Noodle) because you have a spoon there so there'd better be some soup for the spoon.
Fried rice shall be out since you mentioned "noodle+set".

This is so fun.
I like guessing game.
I think this shall be the wonton noodle soup.

Oh sorry I am late here but never too late to join the fun.

I see an empty plate, Chinese spoon and chopsticks, so in theory it is something in soup. Then I recall how we eat dried noodle with wanton, barbecue pork rice, and single plate dish when we were boys. Also with a pair of chopsticks and spoon.

I have heard that TC loves the rainbow trout and trio soup there, but both are definitely not use a pair of chopsticks to help.

Yes TC loves khao soi noodle, and TC also loves khanon jeen noodle. But I see there is an "else",

So this can be anything, soup or dried. The focus shall be on what what is good at the Mandarin Oriental Coffee Shop that TC is "fond" of!

I reserve my guess until TC gave us more hints. TC, you will right?

Do I qualify for a CSI post?

With a pair of chopstick and Chinese spoon, TC was definitely going there for noodle soup, and it was khao soi the Northern noodle I guess.

I saw TC used chopsticks to eat pizza. The spoon was used for holding on the other end. It's because when you eat pizza with fork and knife, the topping and sauce will fall out. If you use your fingers to hold it, it is quite dirty. Maybe it's another fusion food. I still need to see if it's with some light effect. My hint is that in those MO outlets, what would you feel normally? Check on the table. I think some photographers being MO fans should know what I mean. :)

@Sea: i didn't change the AWB when i took this pic, but, i did it in photoshop .. hehe u don't need Pixmation to check with it, u almost got me; oops, pizza is a good guess of the "else", btw, i just ate pizza last night in a six-table bistro near MBK, run by an Italian and his lover, very good and inexpensive

@Stella: good guess!

@FishBurger: yes u qualify the CSI job, but u also saying nothing here, pls guess, no more hints, sorry pal

@Sea: u r right, the lovely Mandarin Oriental, they will provide every method a customer wanna eat his food (as long as it is legal), so ..

Hi SEA,
I did look and look and enlarge at the table but did not find any hint.

Hi TC,
Your "noodle" word is gone already, only left with "set...".
Fast reaction huh. :)

in the sea said...

Thanks for that. Now at least I know more.. :) Stella, you don't need to enlarge the photo. TC has his habit to eat some of his favourite food in various MOs. Each outlet has its characteristics. Why I asked about the AWB is to ........
Maybe I am now into taking photos, something on the photo is the hint to me. This thing is the fundamental thing in photography. Without it, a photo can never be made. :)

I agree, TC has his habit to eat different favourite food in various MO's. From the only picture shown, TC maybe at the MO's Emporium cafe. I think Sea may agree with me!

With a pair of chopstick and Chinese spoon, khao soi shall be the number 1 suspect. But TC also mentioned "else", and as I know TC pretty well, his "else" shall mean what he really ate and to show us later in the post. Also the chopstick and spoon maybe just some smoke!

Now TC forces me to guess. I shall say it was fried rad na noodle. Because at MO's Emporium, TC always orders fried rad na noodle, khao soi, and sirloin steak.

TC, shall you honour the CSI master degree to me?

personally the trio soup, the curry dishes and the tea set sound very yummy to me.

345 baht is exactly the price of a wontan soup noodle in the coffee shop.

Wow.. Fillet O Fish, a good guess! Yes, I guess it's Emporium. Why? It's the light reflecting on the table. It shouldn't be at Verandah because Verandah has different ceiling bouncing back light. Siam Paragon has a more enclosed "round everywhere" lighting. So It has to be the one in Emporium. Emporium has more direct lighting. So I noticed on the table on such direct lighting. Now that we can lock up the location - Emporium! Also the table mat in Emporium MO is different from the others (where those others use a mellow green table cloth). We can narrow the guess on what TC likes at MO outlet in Emporium. I am pretty sure it's not on what he listed. It's the "else"....
Pixmation, I still 10000% urge you to pay a visit to BKK. The lobster bisque in this MO outlet and Le Normandie (at their mother base MO) are super super good. I'll of course be so much pleased to be a tour guide, but you need to do some exercises with your tummy stretching for at least 3 months in advance. :)

Funny the only photo in this post was gone tonight. Only the words there. This is not the only time there is no photo for a post but later tomorrow it may show up again.
Don't know why.

The guessing is getting fun now.
I agree with SEA that Pixation shall visit BKK asap before US dollar further depreciates.

Tommy Leung said...

He can also eat onion soup with spoon, and use the chopstick to eat cheese and bread.

in the sea said...

I can still see the photo. Actually using chopsticks is quite hygiene considering our mouth won't touch the chopsticks.

Thailand Club said...

@FishBurger: very CSI, yes u got the master degree, but doesn't mean u hv the right guess though!

@Pixmation: the trio soup is too good not to be missed if u visit the MO's Salon de L'Oriental at the Emporium, with Sea being ur guide u will love Bangkok ..

@Anonymous 08-April 19:08: do u remember price of every dishes in MO's outlets? anyway cannot say the wanton soup is the answer (btw, if u leave ur name in the comment the fun will be enhanced)

@Sea: both u and FishBurger r observant enough, very CSI

@Stella: the photo is there, it is ur browser's problem, next time, if u don't c a complete page in Firefox, u may switch to IE, or the vice versa; i am on Flock and Chrome, they r reliable browsers

@Tommy: French onion soup is a good guess, and it made sense, as i did that (remember!) before

The photo is back tonight TC.

Mmh... there are several choices such as:
1. Chinese afternoon tea set - siu mai/har gao plus a Yunan Po Er Tea...etc.
2. Lobster E-fu noodle.
3. Beef noodle soup.
4. Chicken rice.
5. Garoupa filet stir fried choy sum on noodle.
6. Thousand year egg shred pork congee.
7. Siu Lon Bao with soy bean drink.
8. Miso pork ramen.
9. Baked pork chop on rice.

Queen William said...

I think it is a fried noodle dish.

Sam said...

Now you told us it is 345 baht++ therefore it shall be easier for them to guess! I lost my rights to the guess since TC told me early in MSN. Guys don't focus on noodle. Think very Thailand. Some culture!

in the sea said...

Correct. In fact, it can be Khao Chae. MO's Khao Chae is different from other Khao Chae. Also the title is tea time, again. So it should be something like a set but not that filling. :)

Anonymous said...

345++ baht happened to be the price for khao chae set in the Oriental Shops, Salon de l'Oriental, and L'Espace at Siam Paragon.

Fillet-O Fish said...

Reasonable, it may be khao chae, why not, it is still khao chae month!

Thailand Club said...

The answer will be posted within the next 24 hours :-)

Stella said...

I don't see Khao Chae being one of the answer though. Otherwise I will guess Khao Chae.
So either Khao Chae or noodle(my first guess for your first item).

Tommy Leung said...

In this case I also think khao chae.

in the sea said...

Ah... Bet "Big" and it's "Small" 買大開細. I actually think of the beef noodle in brown soup but THB345 seems to be a bit high. OK, then Khao Chae!

Thailand Club said...

congratulations Fish Burger, Tommy and Sea, yes it is khao chae

Sam, appreciated ur being so gentlemen!

Stella said...

Hey, I guessed Khao Chae too at last minute, after being inspired by Fish Burger, Tommy, SEA, SAM and Anonymous April 11 11:16.

Fillet-O Fish said...

So much sweat, so much smoke, end up it is khao chae again!

in the sea said...

Thanks for this happy fun. Ok, next year, we will have a "radiation free" khao Chae. Cheers for all having taken part in this game.

Thailand Club said...

well, need not wait until next year, in this week post, another guess ..

Good to hear that more guessing game is coming.
Thank you TC for the fun.
Look forward to it.
