Gedhawa

BANGKOK AMAZING GOURMET
.

Gedhawa

Chiangmai is the second largest city in Thailand; however, strange that northern Thai (Lanna Thai) cuisine is not popular in Bangkok. When I meet my Chiangmai friends who live in Bangkok, they never agreed to do Lanna. Their answer - too oily (of Lanna food) and they had enough back in their childhood days. That's also answered why Issan (northeastern Thai) food is relatively popular in Bangkok due to the heavy use of fresh and herbal ingredients with the less-oily cooking method.

Thanks to two expat foodies, finally I am able to sample savory Lanna Thai cuisine in Bangkok!

1. khanom-jeen nam ngew Baht 70; 2. larb moo northern style Baht 100

namprik oong (red) and namprik noom (green)

3. namprik oong-noom Baht 220

4. tord mun pla Gedhawa (spicy deep-fried fish cakes) Baht 85

5. Gedhawa omelet with fermented sausage Baht 95
6. laem mok (spicy fermented sausage northern style) Baht 85

7. yum jin gai (ultra spicy soup with chicken - northern style) Baht 100

8. daily-home-made tubtim krob (red rubies chestnuts) Baht 45;
9. chao kuay (herbal jelly) Baht 45

choice of garden seat or air-conditioned dining room

Since the discovery of Gedhawa, an excuse to visit Chiangmai just for sampling northern Thai cuisine became nonsense.

16 top Chefs gathering for this event is really something. I am sure the Event is very hot and crowded. Though I can't try it in person, I can tell from the description of the dishes are very time consuming in preparing.

OH... I'm really slobbering all over my computer now. What a novel way of doing charity.

The northern Thai food looks spicy hot. Maybe it is cold there so they like to eat hot hot to balance.

Thanks for the posting. The foods look good. Soi 35 is not far. LX-3 does a good job in the light compensation. The herbal jelly has a mint leaf in it, making it a bit cooler. :)

the food was excellent there, if one can eat (very) spicy food :)

that's why the shop needs no advertising or advertorial, never seen its ads on magazine

however, the dining room was full of foreigners, maybe its location (in the heart of Bangkok expats residential area) and international guidebook such as Lonely Planet has its coverage ...

Oh kidteung Lanna namprik noom so much!

mmh... Suk Nana to Ekkamai area is getting more and more attractive restaurants. I think by just looking at the restaurant's decor., those foreigners including us are more than willing to try it.

TC, is the fish patty in white color or the tamarind brown red color? It seems to be white, right?

Stella said...

Thai Fish cake here in LA is always in Tamarind Brown red color though.

Thailand Club said...

the patties were made from white fish, and fish cakes were orange-brown color

Northern Thai food and Bangkok Thai food are the same to me.
As a foreigner I cannot tell at all.
Just know they are spicy but delicious and we need to drink lots of ice water.

Thanks TC. Why I brought that was because at that time I went to Pranburi and tried a local restaurant, they made the fish patty in white without mixing the spice and tamarind...stuff. They put some parsley and scallion in it which is quite Cantonese style. As I watched the photo of the fish patty here, it seemed it's quite white. I kind of prefer the white fish patty without too much spice. Parsley and scallion is best to go with the fish taste and maintain the sweetness of the fish meat. That's why I seldom order the fish patty in Thai restaurant.

the fish cake at Gedhawa was ultra spicy :( probably not what u like

frankly, it tasted delicious, though it burnt my stomach

normally, tamarind is not one of the ingredients, the blood-orange color came from the mixture of chilies paste

Stella said...

All Thai Restaurants here have the fish cake in brown color with some tamarind taste(little bit sour taste plus little spicy).

Thailand Club said...

a (very) subtle sour only to bring out aroma of the chilies and red curry paste r from the kaffir lime leaves, authentic Thai fish cakes shouldn't hv tamarind as the sour source

if all LA Thai eateries use tamarind as the fish cakes ingredients, then probably u r not eating Thai food, but American-Thai food

like u eat at Panda Express, u no eating Chinese food, it is chop-suey food

Yes, the tamarind will have some subtle sour taste. SS, my LA friend often brought me to a restaurant on Hollywood Blvd. (a bit east of Hollywood area) and it's called Sai Nam Lai (not sure if my memory is ok). Their chicken noodle soup is 4 times bigger than the noodle soup we tried in Thailand.

Thailand Club said...

har Sai Nam Lai? OMG u know what is that mean?

hahaha another guessing game

:)

in the sea said...

Mmh.. I guess Sai means good/fine, Nam is water, Lai is "from" - so the whole meaning is "where the fine dining is?". I know it's wrong as per TC's note of wonder.

Thailand Club said...

since it is written in karaoke-Thai but not in Thai fonts, i can only make a guess

from the pronunciation, Sai = put, Nam Lai = saliva

hahaha so Sai Nam Lai is a funny name

:)

Har... maybe it's not the correct words I heard. Just my friend's friend is a Thai bringing him to that restaurant and might tell him the name. Then when my friend recalls it at 80%, I then listened to it 80%. So what I have had in mind is like this "Sai Nam Lai".. haha. Maybe it means it's mouthwatering... :)

will go to Gedhawa again tonight, with 8 ppls, 2 from Japan, 2 from Southern California, 1 from Hong Kong, 3 from Thailand

really expecting the dinner, since Gedhawa cuisine is superb, and the homemade tubtim krob ruby chestnuts dessert is the best in Sukhumvit area

Mmh.. then it's good to learn from each Country's culture to view this restaurant. You did make a very clear specific remark "the best in Suk. area", unlike those claiming the best in the whole world.

Thailand Club said...

hahaha yes if written "the best in the whole world" maybe too broad
